Shipwreck Bay, also known as Te Kohanga, is a captivating and rugged beach in Ahipara. It’s especially famous for its exceptional surf breaks, natural beauty, and, as the name suggests, remnants of shipwrecks that wash ashore, particularly visible at low tide. Shipwreck Bay features a legendary left-hand point break that can form long waves for surfers. Please note, it's considered suitable for advanced surfers and there are nearby breaks on Ninety Mile Beach that offer a variety of waves for surfers of different levels. The bay gets its name from the visible remains of old shipwrecks along the shoreline at low tide. Some of the wreckage dates back to the 19th century and offers a glimpse into New Zealand's maritime history.
