Alison, a born and bred local, and Gordon, who has had ties to the area since the 1970s, took over the Park in 1996. For them, running Timaru TOP 10 is more than just a business, it’s a lifestyle. Though it comes with its challenges, they love the vibrant mix of people the Park attracts and are passionate about making every guest’s stay enjoyable and carefree.
They and their team are enthusiastic ambassadors for Timaru, happy to share insider tips on everything from scenic walks and secret spots to the best local fish and chips. Whether you're planning a 20-minute stroll to the beach via New Zealand’s largest playground and the local aviary, or mapping out a full NZ road trip, the team’s encyclopedic local knowledge is always on hand.
Environmental sustainability is also at the heart of how they run the Park. From installing solar water heating and energy-efficient lighting, to launching a large-scale native restoration project, the Collister’s are committed to making a positive impact. One of their proudest initiatives is the revitalisation of the Waimataitai Stream, which borders the Park. What was once a dumping ground is now home to over 1000 native trees and shrubs, with thriving bird life, eels, and even the occasional whitebait. A bush walk is also in the works, so guests can explore this natural gem up close.
Beyond the Park, Gordon and Alison are both actively involved in the Timaru community. Alison is the president of Swim Timaru which involves officiating at meets in Christchurch and at national level events. She’s also passionate about badminton, contributing as both a player and coach. Meanwhile, Gordon is an avid sailor and serves on the committee of the Timaru Yacht and Power Boat Club. His influence extends beyond the local area, having played a significant role in the tourism industry as a founding director of the TOP 10 Holiday Parks Group and a former Vice President of HAPNZ.
With their deep roots, dedication to hospitality, and love for the land and community, Gordon and Alison are truly local at heart - and they’ve created a Park that reflects just that.
