Hot Water Beach is situated on the Coromandel Peninsula and is famous for the natural hot springs that seep up from the volcanic fissures below. Regarded by Lonely Planet as one of their 12 best “sandy spots”, it ticks all the boxes by being close enough to Auckland yet off the beaten track and, importantly, its pristine beauty can be experienced throughout the year.
Hot Water Beach is the most famous of the Coromandel beaches. Lying on a geothermal fault, hot water seeps from the springs below which can be accessed for two hours either side of low tide. Find a hot spot and dig yourself a pool to relax in the warm therapeutic waters and enjoy the view of the south Pacific Ocean.
There are always things to do when staying at Hot water Beach Top 10 Holiday Park. Our Hot Water Beach accommodation and camping ground is situated within easy access to great local food, wine, and opportunities to explore Hot Water Beach, and surrounding areas whilst you embrace the culture of New Zealand and the Coromandel Peninsula.
Where to Eat In the Coromandel
Based in the heart of the fertile Coromandel region, our eateries are provided with seasonal food and seafood farmed or caught locally. Our holiday park is surrounded by farms - from sheep, avocado and kiwi orchards to the local wine estates. Local restaurants are varied to suit all palates from the humble but tasty bakery to French cuisine. Cafes and boutique breweries are scattered throughout the area with a local farmers market selling wares through summer and we are often entertained by the many musicians living in the area
Tours & Sightseeing
If you are into hiking, surfing or a love to find the best photo spots – heaven awaits. The Pinnacles track, created by foresters and gum diggers in the 1900’s meanders through semi tropical forests, crossing waterfalls and finally after 4-6hrs reaching the overnight accommodation. Stay overnight, walk for two hours in the morning and you will meet the dizzy heights of the summit, rewarded with a 360 degree view of the Coromandel peninsula.Certainly well worth the effort..
Arts, Culture and History in the Coromandel Region
Coromandel Artists are celebrated annually with the Mercury Bay Art Escape – a two week tour of the area where one can visit artists in their home to view their work. The inaugural Mercury Bay Music Festival was held over Queens Birthday weekend in 2016 and is set to become an annual event. It’s an inspiring three days of New Zealand music talent and a great weekend to get away to the Coromandel either with the family or as a group.
Craft fairs and art galleries are a regular feature of the local towns, and with the historic Coromandel gold rush and the visit by Captain James Cook to Mercury Bay – museums in Thames and Whitianga are a must do.
Surfing, Fishing and Diving on the Coromandel
Water sports are a way of life here on the Coromandel. Hot Water Beach is a popular surf spot throughout the year with a point break that is quite reliable, working best in offshore winds from the west with the beach breaks offering left and rights. Please be aware, there is a powerful rip and lifeguards are not always on duty in the winter months.
Diving on the Coromandel is well catered for with dive excursions for beginners as well as experienced divers. Our holiday park can accommodate large families or groups and snorkelling is very popular with a marine reserve on our doorstep close to Cathedral Cove and Hahei. We do have wetsuits to hire for surfing but all dive shops in the area hire wetsuits.
For the fishing on the Coromandel there are fishing charters galore. Catch some tasty snapper or pick a fight with a king fish and bring it back for a feast in our spacious barbeque area. If you don’t catch anything we have a fish and chips takeaway as well as a small grocery store.
