Mount Tauhara is a long-dormant volcano approximately 4 miles east of Taupō on the North Island of New Zealand. There is a casual, minimally maintained trail leading to its summit that climbs steeply through cow pastures, dense forest and bush. For the walker or hiker willing to climb stiles, and walk through farmlands and what is sometimes thick foliage on a narrow, uneven path, a beautiful 360 degree view of the Taupō and Central North Island region are a worthy reward.
