At the base of Northland's beautiful Karikari Peninsular you'll find a peculiar little lake, unnamed on maps but known to the locals as Coca Cola Lake.
The locals have named the lake after the worlds favourite soft drink as it is exactly the same colour! Heavy peat deposits in the surrounding earth have imbued it with a dark auburn tinge and while still completely safe to drink, swimming in the lake is a unique and interesting experience, particularly if you go under!
