Earthquake - Drop, Cover and Hold
In the event of an earthquake in most buildings in New Zealand, it is safer to stay where you are until the shaking stops. If you are unable to drop, the best action is to brace yourself against a wall or furniture. is the right action to take in an earthquake. It stops you from being knocked over, makes you a smaller target for falling and flying objects and protects your head, neck and vital organs.
BE PREPARED! KIA MATAARA!
In the event of an earthquake, it is vital that you respond immediately. Be clear about what actions to take in the environment you are in. Right now, scan your room - and identify safe places that you can go in the event of a earthquake.
What if I am outside during an earthquake? That's okay, don't panic - move no more than a few steps away from buildings, trees, streetlights, and power lines, then DROP, COVER AND HOLD.
What about if I'm sleeping in bed? You are less likely to be injured if you stay in bed, so stay put, pull the sheets and blankets over you, and use your pillow to protect your head and neck.
What if I have a family member with a walker or wheel chair? Lock, Cover and Hold! LOCK your wheels, if you can and if you are using a walker carefully get as low as possible. Bend over and COVER your head and neck as best you can. Then HOLD on until the shaking stops.
Tsunami - If an earthquake is LONG or STRONG - GET GONE
What do we do next? We are situated on a beach, if you experience the following listed below, immediately self-evacuate and over to the nearest high ground or as far in land as you can. Walk or bike if possible. Please do not rely on our staff or Civil Defence emergency alert.
If you experience - please self-evacuate!
- A strong earthquake that makes it hard to stand up or a weak rolling earthquake that lasts a minute or more.
- See a sudden rise or fall in sea level
- Hear a loud and unusual noise from the sea
Can we expect after shocks? We may however prepare yourself to expect aftershocks, each time you feel one, just DROP, COVER and HOLD. Aftershocks can occur minutes, days, weeks, months and even years following an earthquake.
Flooding
Our team will drive around in a holiday park vehicle tooting the horn to alert all guests to evacuate.
When you hear the horn, please evacuate and make your way to a civil defence centre.
Our team will not be individually checking rooms or tent sites, as this jeopardises their safety.
You will also most likely receive an emergency mobile alert text from civil defence if there is ever a need to self-evacuate in our area. However, if you feel unsafe - we encourage you to move to safety. Please do not rely on our staff or the civil defence emergency mobile alert.
Evacuated - we've evacuated, so what now?
Below are a few helpful sources that you can use to help yourself become informed if you are ever staying with us during a natural disaster or state of emergency. The sources will share info like road conditions, where to find civil defence welfare centres, weather conditions and so much more.
Are there any websites I can search to check for updates?
As locals, we quite often stay up to date via Facebook and we follow the Tairawhiti Civil Defence page - this page is regularly update by our local civil defence team. You can also visit the website: www.gdc.govt.nz.
