And you'll see giant volcanic sea cliffs and hear about Akaroa's fascinating past. Cruises depart every day, weather permitting. Also on the trip you will catch glimpses of the White Flippered Blue Penguin, the smallest penguin in the world. 10% off 'Black Cat' Swimming with Dolphins

With Black Cat Cruises you will enjoy a once in a lifetime experience; it's the ultimate dolphin experience by swimming with the Hector's Dolphin. Hector’s dolphins are protected in Akaroa Harbour by a marine mammal sanctuary and our cruise gives you the chance to see these beautiful marine mammals close up in their natural habitat.Hector's dolphins are endemic to New Zealand, meaning that you will not find them anywhere else in the world, and Akaroa is the only place you can take a trip out to swim with them. They are also the world's smallest and rarest dolphin. An encounter with a Hector's dolphin in the wild is truly a once in a lifetime experience. This is possibly why Black Cat Cruises dolphin swim experience is listed in the Lonely Planet guide as on of the 'Top 10 Marine Mammal Experiences in The World'!

Banks Peninsula is one of the few places you can see one of the smallest marine dolphins in the world. They are less than 1.5 meters in length and can live up to 20 years. Females only have 4-5 calves in a lifetime. Calving usually happens between November and February. The NZ fur seal dives deeper (200 meters) and longer (10 minutes) than any other fur seal. Pups are born in November to January. Back in the 1800's they were hunted to the brink of extinction. Since their protection in 1978, their numbers seem to be recovering. Enjoy Little Blue Penguins (Eudyptula minor albosignata) The white flippered variety. The best place to see these delightful, tiny penguins is during the day, out on the water where they are fishing. At only 25 cm tall, they are the world's smallest penguin. Discover many different Seabirds Terns, gannets, albatross, petrels, shearwaters and shags--they will amaze you with their speed and beauty. We can take you close to their nesting sites and watch them fishing.

Join one of the last remaining ‘Genuine’ Mail Boats left in the world, still delivering mail and groceries as it has been for almost a century. Old timers row out in dinghies to meet us, while some receive their supplies on tiny, unspoilt beaches. The people of the Marlborough Sounds are as much a part of the area as the history and majestic beauty. It really is a great way to cruise the Marlborough Sounds!

10% Discount Akaroa Coastal Adventures-Southern Wanderer
More
Akaroa is a small seaside settlement, 80 kilometers by road from Christchurch. The Maori name translates as 'long bay' and refers to the harbour, in the crater of an extinct volcano that has been flooded by the sea. The township was founded in 1840 as the only attempt by the French to colonise New Zealand.
Our trips visit places where the volcanic formation of the Banks Peninsula and the effects of erosion by waves and weather are vividly displayed. We pass historic sites of national significance and observe native flora and fauna, from palm trees to penguins, albatrosses to whatever else is out there in their wild and natural habitats.
Please let us know when booking if you have a particular interest, e.g. geology, seabirds, landscape photography, etc... We will do our best to tailor each trip to suit the preferences of the passengers on board. Of course, the weather and sea conditions will also influence where we go and what we see.

Old Ghost Cycle Trail
More
In the North West corner of the South Island of New Zealand a ghost has awakened. A long-forgotten gold miners’ road has been revived as a mountain biking and tramping trail – connecting the old dray road in the Lyell (Upper Buller Gorge) to the mighty Mokihinui River in the north. The 85km-long Old Ghost Road traverses majestic native forest, open tussock tops, river flats and forgotten valleys.
A proud member of the New Zealand Cycle Trail, the volunteer-driven Mokihinui-Lyell Backcountry Trust has partnered with a range of other entities to make The Old Ghost Road a reality. It’s almost as if the engineers from the 1870’s knew we were coming! The spirits of the old miners and track builders are inescapable and four ghost towns populate the route. The Old Ghost Road is quite literally an 85km-long outdoor museum.

Caroline Bay Beach
More
Recently the AA Traveller Facebook page conducted a poll on the most popular beaches in NZ. Caroline Bay was rated 4th overall and easily the most popular in the South Island.
The beach is sheltered by the harbour breakwater and is the only sandy beach between Oamaru and Banks Peninsula. March 2014 saw Caroline Bay beach being voted the most popular beach in the South Island.
Allied with the popular swimming beach is the annual summer carnival run by the voluntary Caroline Bay Association. The carnival has been operating for over a hundred years and draws people from around much of New Zealand to attend or assist with its operation. The carnival is a traditional family affair with free concerts, rides and sideshow style games.
Caroline Bay itself is located between the Pacific Ocean and the Timaru Central Business District, being separated from the main shopping area by the South Island Main Trunk Railway lines. The Piazza straddles the railway line and provides access for pedestrians via a grand staircase or via a lift which is unique for a public park in this country. Caroline Bay covers an area of 34 hectares excluding the beach.

Te Ana Maori Rock Art- Timaru
More
The majority of the rock art sites in New Zealand are found in Te Waipounamu, or the South Island. They are widely spread from Fiordland in the southeast to Karamea in the northwest. However, the major concentrations of sites are located in the limestone rich areas of the Aoraki district covering North Otago and South Canterbury.
There are two main types of rock art. The art can be scratched or carved into stone, or it can be painted or drawn onto the stone’s surface. In New Zealand it is recorded that the rock art paint was made from animal or bird fat mixed with vegetable gum and soot or kokowai (red ochre) to make black or red paint.

Trevor Griffiths Rose Garden
More
Opened in December 2001, the garden was established to preserve and honour the collection of old roses gathered over a lifetime by the celebrated rosarian Trevor Griffiths. Designed by the Christchurch architect Sir Miles Warren, the garden comprises a series of geometric beds radiating from the central pergola - clearly seen from the piazza above. The design has strong lines created by the use of steel structures - gazebos and central pergola while arbours link the whole. A small fountain pool and classical bronze figure forms the centerpiece. A planting plan identifies 1150 roses. Besides the old roses English roses are planted in twos and threes to provide continuous flowering with a gradual progression of colour from one end of the garden to the other. December, when the ramblers and noisettes are in flower, is spectacular. The garden is owned by the community and maintained by the Timaru District Council and volunteers.

At the Cape, the Tasman Sea meets the Pacific Ocean in a spectacular swirl of currents. At the northernmost tip of the Cape is a gnarled pohutukawa tree, believed to be over 800 years old. While it’s not quite the most northern point of New Zealand (North Cape is further north, but it’s a scientific reserve and not open to the public), Cape Reinga is definitely the end of the road.
